Guidelines For Updating
Applying updates can be a simple or complex process depending on the modifications you may have made to your avatar, and the present changes in the update. Always make a backup of your modified projects before updating as a “just in case”.
To apply an update to your project
simply import the new package and keep the following in mind to avoid or minimize data loss
- Back-Up your project
- It can save quite a bit of headache and is extremely easy to do with VRChat Creator Companion
- To create a backup with Creator Companion, simply select the 3 dotted box next to your project’s name and select “Create Backup”. After a moment the backup will be complete, and you can continue with the changes to your project
- Understand the changes made in your project
- If you’ve overwritten parts of the base file (Textures, Meshes, Materials, ETC.) as opposed to duplicating and modifying, then it is likely to be overwritten in an update.
- In the “Import Unity Package” window, Uncheck the boxes next to the assets you want to keep.
- Some changed assets may be necessary to import for certain additions to work. Most often, this would be changes to Scene, Prefab, Mesh, Animator, Menu, and Parameter assets.
- To future-proof your avatar, it’s always recommended to avoid changing objects in the base package and instead opt to utilize modular systems like VRCFury for your assets and toggles.
- VRCFury items that are saved as separate prefabs can easily be added back to your project with little issue
- For assets that can’t be installed modularly, it’s probably best to duplicate the objects that will need to be changed to install the asset (such as Animators, Menus, and Parameters) and install using those duplicated objects instead
- A way you could accomplish this retroactively is to rename your assets. This will effectively separate them from the asset that will be overwritten on installation of the update
- Updating the avatar base prefabs will likely result in losing the connection to your avatar ID in the pipeline manager. You can retrieve and re-connect this by going to the “Content Manager” tab in the VRChat SDK, clicking the “Copy ID” button next to your avatar, pasting it into the “Blueprint ID (Optional)” section, and clicking “Attach (Optional)”
- You will most likely also need to re-assign custom Animator, Menu, and Parameter objects
1.2.0
Overview
This update mostly focuses Face Tracking, but comes with a few extra quality of life additions. To update your project from 1.1, refer to the above guidelines for a general overview. Always ensure you keep a backup of your project! Overwriting your scene objects will remove any changes you’ve made to your avatar
When selecting assets to overwrite or keep, general users will want to deselect all their custom textures, but ensure the new “Teeth_Mask” texture is imported as it’s used for the new Face Emission Adjustment toggles!
You’ll also want to import the new Misc. and Eye materials for the same system. If you’ve done customizations to these materials, or assigned your textures in a particular way, you may want to use caution.
You’ll also want to import the new Modular Toggles. You may need to manually add them to your modular toggles object if it has been broken from the original prefab. You can always use the Modular Toggles prefab as well.
